Racket in the Oceans

2016 Workshop Series on Ocean Noise Pollution and Responsible Innovation

Underwater noise is a major environmental issue. The Observatory for Responsible Innovation and the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation is tackling it through Racket in the Oceans: a series of workshops with major actors and stakeholders, that translates into a large international conference and a policy proposal. The initiative is carried out with the help of an independent working group supervised by Héloïse Berkowitz and Hervé Dumez of the Centre de Recherche en Gestion of the École Polytechnique. PSL Environnement kindly supports the initiative. Read the full policy report here.

Workshop 1: Noise Measurement - 9 February 2016

The objective of the workshop was to synthetize the state of the art of underwater noise measurements, to map the current situation and to investigate what priorities should be supported and how they should be promoted. This first workshop took place on 9 February 2016 at the French Ministry of Research in Paris (1 rue Descartes, 75005 Paris) and gathered more than 45 experts, policy-makers, stakeholders and industry representatives. Program here.

Workshop 2: Impact on Marine Life - 10 March 2016

The second workshop presented the state of the art on the knowledge of impacts on marine life (mammals, fish, invertebrates, etc.) and pursued the discussion towards coordination and policy improvement. The workshop was held on 10 March 2016 at the premises of Mines ParisTech in Paris (60 boulevard Saint-Michel, 75006 Paris). Program here.

Workshop 3: Innovative Solutions and Management Devices - 17 May 2016

The last workshop tackled the hot topic of technical, managerial and economic innovative solutions to marine sound problems, and took place on 17 May, also at Mines ParisTech (60 boulevard Saint-Michel, 75006 Paris). Program here.

Final Conference: Debating Innovation in Underwater Noise - 20 September 2016

These workshops will result in a position paper that will synthesize the three topics and will provide best practices and guidelines on marine sound management. The project will be closed with an international conference to be held in Paris, 20 September 2016, at the Maison des Océans in Paris (195 rue Saint-Jacques, 75005 Paris). Full program available here.
